Hi came home today after the kids had been using the Ps3 and when i turn it on it starts to load i get the boot sound but there are no icons, also when i put a game in there is a load icon flashing like if its loading game but that’s as fare as it goes.
Is there some like a Boot CD that will repair the Ps3 operating system without losing all my data on there. Or does anyone have a way they can help my Ps3 work again.
I have played with boot CDs on windows and fdisk so i got a little understanding on how things work. Started reading about Boot CDs for a PS3 and came across this link http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-howto/ps3-boot-recovery-howto.txt
But didn’t really understand without reading more so thought i would ask for help. Just thought this would be the best place to start and hope someone can help or point me a direction. From that link i tried

"** force the game-os to boot **

To force the PS3 to boot into the game-os, shutdown the PS3, then press and
hold the power button on the front of the system until a beep is heard, then
Release the power button. The video mode and boot flag settings will be re-set
to the defaults and the game-os will boot."
But after that when the PS3 boots i don’t get the boot sound from the PS3
Thanks for your time doj harris

Your message is a litle confusing, let me try to understand:

Your Default PS3 OS will not boot properly? It is confusing because you never mentioned having Linux installed on the PS3, but those instructions are to switch your PS3's Boot setting from Linux back to the PS3 OS.

The PS3 OS's system restore utlilty is found under the settings menu of the XMB. It has a backup feature so you can back up saved game data, a large removable storage media or usb Hard disk will be needed.

If you haven't ever installed Linux or messed with the 'install other os' feature under the setting menu of the XMB, then the info at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-howto/ps3-boot-recovery-howto.txt isn't going to help you much. Sorry if I misunderstand.

Ok thanks for you help, but lets start from the beginning as we got crossed wires here.

I have not installed Linux or messed with the 'install other os' feature under the setting menu of the XMB.

The PS3 is as factory default apart from my PS3games, settings and upto date with the latest patch.

When i turn my PS3 on it doest load the XMB menu. Is there anything i can do to get my PS3 working again.

When i turn the PS3 on the words "sony entertainment" pop up for a few seconds,,,((or when ever it said))

When i put a game in, no game loads but i do get a loading disc icon pop up for a few seconds at the top rite
Is there anything i can do to fix my problem ?

(((So there does seem to be life in there but looks like a software error or harddisk error)))

Have you tried contacting Sony or going on their PS3 forums?

If you're not running linux on your PS3 I fail to see why you're posting here for help.

That's what I was wondering in my previous post. lol.

But, I do own a PS3, I would like to try to help. Someone else here suggested going to the Sony PlayStation Forums. That is a good idea. They were a big help for me a few occasions when I bought a PS3.

As for your Problem, I have never experienced it. But I DO know, the PS3's OS is flashed onto a chip in the console, and is virtually untouchable. So the problem could be the PS3's HDD. Also, REMOVE all discs, USB devices, ect., before starting the console. Sounds like when the OS is loading settings at boot it is freezing upon accessing the HDD. Anything else such as Blu-Ray drive failure, or overheating, is usually indicated by a yellow light on the console.

I would advise (ESPECIALLY if you are still in warranty) to call Sony on this one. Just a note-- If you have an extra 3.5" SATA HDD laying around, try following the directions on how to swap HDD's at playstation.com; to see if it's just a bad HDD before you send it off for a repair. But if you are worried about losing save data, call sony first ;)
