A reference for linux programming...

I'm looking for a (preferably free online) reference that details the fundamentals of Linux from a development/administration standpoint...

I know there are quite a few tutorials/introductions out there written from an end-user standpoint however I'm more interested in the mechanics of Linux (especially that which is common between distros).

Can anyone suggest a manual/book/reference (if you can include a link that would be much appreciated...)?

From what I've heard the linux from scratch is a good book.

But I think you need to learn this stuff hands on.
