Why do you prefer one over the other?

It seems that KDE basically looks nicer - is it as simple as that?

Thanks as usual!!

You're asking whether folks prefer gnome or kde. Just search "gnome vs kde" here or google it. You'll find a billion posts on this one.

I did that - your right - comes with being new to this all! In fact i have a copy of Kubuntu that I am going to try out as a live demo.

In my experience i've found gnome a lot more stable than kde... I think maybe this issue is being addressed with the release of kde4.2... but its not for me

The very boring answer;

I use Ubuntu. It does what I want it to do. I am happy with it. What is Kubuntu ?

(Seriously - I know nothing about Kubuntu - is it better ? Will it meet my needs ? )

I use Ubuntu, because I don't like KDE.

I prefer kubuntu to ubuntu because it has a multirow taskbar out of the box and has the apps I like. Plus it's not an eyesore like gnome *puts fireproof coat on*

However I prefer arch to *buntu because of pacman, rolling release, minimal bloat and AUR

The short answer is Kubuntu is Ubuntu without GNOME. GNOME is, simply stated, your common default desktop environment for popular distros, most notably Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu.[1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME#Usage)] As a result, GNOME provides lots and lots of packages with lots and lots dependencies. . .see kde's claim for kubuntu [gnome vs kde dependencies (http://people.freebsd.org/~adamw/gnome_kde_deps/)] and [reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/6bh6v/gnome_vs_kde_dependencies/)] for discussion.

(Seriously - I know nothing about Kubuntu - is it better ? Will it meet my needs ? ) Measuring something like 'is desktop-environment x better than desktop-environment y' is a pointless pursuit, so if 'gnome' is doing what you want it to do and you satisfied in how it does it, don't install KDE, otherwise you'll soon find yourself at mercy of the devil of Debian's package dependencies and your gnome environment will never function or look the same ever again.

There several avenues for pursuing experimental builds but I've always done so with VirtualBox or an entirely separate image. Hope I could. ;)

EDIT: One more thing to consider for understanding the 'big-picture' of desktop-environments is the comparison of X window systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_Window_System_desktop_environments #Desktop_comparison_information).

Assuming this thread has transformed into a kde vs gnome discussion, here is my take:

I think the KDE developers caught on to the fact that consumers have to WANT to use the desktop, not just use the desktop because it's there. KDE4 reflects a lot of that design. It's functional... and sexy.

To me Gnome is stuck in a clique. They don't actually satisfy a need on the desktop market. The experience isn't pleasant to use. They don't accept outside code. To me Gnome exists largely on the whims of people already using Gnome. I don't see a clear design goal from Gnome, a direction for where the desktop WANTS to go. There might be one, but the dev team is horrible about communicating it.

All other desktops have a goal. Whether it's to be as small as possible, least intrusive, lightest on resources, and so on, the various Box'es, XFCE, KDE, IceWM, E17... each has a goal for what they want to do.

Maybe Gnome does need to die to help Linux grow. There's little doubt that KDE4 will replace KDE3. It might not be until KDE 4.5, or after, but it is going to happen.

Another thread? There's no answer for that.

I like KDE for two reasons.

1) looks better.

2) less insular.

As you said, Gnome take little code from outside sources. Basically, if you want to contribute your own code to Gnome, you'd be better taking Gnomes code base and getting your own Devs, because otherwise it'll take years before they let you in.

On the flip side, you turn up to Akademy and you're welcomed happily.

I use Gnome, Mainly because i don't feel like i have the time for trying out Kubuntu. and because i know Gnome so well by now, and i really like it.

let me rewrite that for you. This is not a dig, and can equally well be applied to those saying the same about KDE rather than Gnome:

"I use Windows, Mainly because i don't feel like i have time for trying out Linux, and because i know Windows so well by now, and i really like it."

Good point. One should try out more alternatives - to fail to do so is to be somewhat "closed-minded".

I consider myself rebuked.

Haha, it's alright.

I have tried Gnome, and it's usable, but not right for me, especially given the.... issues that my friends have with the devs. (The unwillingness to use any code that doesn't come from someone they know, regardless of how good the code is, being just one issue.)

As I've said, I use Openbox mostly just now, but will use whatever comes on a Live CD when using it and not care too much.
