Can the drive read any discs (like in another OS or using a BootCD)?

Also, for future reference, please use [ CODE ][ /CODE ] tags when pasting long blocks of output

I've just tried another disk and it's mounted now!
Hopefully that's been a mechanical issue...
But why dmesg asks for:
Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
and
sda:<4>Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods
....
How to update them?

That's not something you can fix (without updating kernel source code).
