After something bad happened (don't ask) I have chosen to add a 2nd desktop environment. Which one is the best (KDE or KFCE)

I was using XFCE and Gnome for last few years, KDE really long ago.
Recently I have tried KDE again and I was quite disappointed - it is too overcomplicated for me, visually strange.

But well, you have to try it yourself, I guess :-)

All have advantages and disadvantages.
Gnome is the old stable desktop where everything has been tested and tried, it offers little flash but makes up for it in functionality.
KDE is still very experimental and new if you are talking about KDE 4.2, KDE 3.5 is a different story as its very stable and has a lot of functionality.
KDE 4.2 despite being better then KDE 4.0 or 4.1 still feels incomplete, Plasma is still quite new, and good luck with getting KDE 4 apps to read music CD without some heavy modding.
XFCE is similar to Gnome, at least in terms of offering little effect but it has a lot of potential.
XFCE might be a bit rough on new users though, its menu editor last time I checked is total %&$E*^^&(

The best for me, hands down, is KDE 3.5.10. I think KDE has superior applications, and nothing beats running them in their default DE. It is more customizable and uses less memory than Gnome if you stick with KDE applications.

If you want to see KDE done properly, try Sidux.

Depends what you want. KDE looks pretty, but is heavy on resources (wait for Jaunty as KDE4.1 was very buggy). XFCE is fast as it's a cut down version of Gnome (best for older PCs which are lower on resources).

There's no simple answer, and you should try for yourself, for every user has different needs. For Kde4, just make sure you activate the backports in order to get kde4.2, you'll have a more pleasing experience.

Best desktop environment (D.E.) for proven stability: GNOME
Best DE for open-source excessive blinkg: KDE 4.2
Best DE for standards compliance and very little resource usage: LXDE

(KDE or KFCE)

I'm afraid I haven't heard of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Environment, but XFCE is definitely my favorite at the moment. :)

:lolflag:

I like XFCE too but it's not my style. I like kde 3.5.X on older systems because it runs quite well. I like Gnome on my big workstations and fluxbox or amiwm on my really old machines.

Oh, and I must write a descriptions for the Kentucky Fried Chicken Environment:

The lighting is terrible, it will burn your eyes.
There are many sauces to put on the panel.
Hundreds of panel styles, all able to be served with a side of menu-bar.:P

If like gnome than xfce is not bad however if you want to try something a little different why not try fluxbox, whitebox, afterstep, or many of the others available . Here are some links that may help get you started.

KDE or GNOME.

Gnome- I like it, no complaints (used on Ubuntu 8.04-9.04 beta)

KDE- 3.whatever- using now, but for some reason konqueror is really buggy (crashes one out of ten times I use
it and decides now not to show icon view regardless of my icon style loaded). (using on PCLOS 2009)

XFCE- liked it, although I didn't notice its "lightweight"ness at all. And a bit glitchy when opening
the menu (distorted lines in a menu sized box for about half a second) although this might be
my video card, I'm not an expert on diagnosing quirkiness. (used on Xubuntu 8.10)

I am interested in these other environments you guys speak of...

:D Respectively I still find Gnome/XfcE to be at least two years behind Kde4, Windows7 and Mac.

KDE if fast machine. XFCE if slow machine. Simple.

LXDE (http://lxde.org) is faster and more lightweight even than XFCE is. It's also much simpler and "newbie friendly." Kinda reminds me of WinXP the way it looks.
