I tried installing Ubuntu using rEFIt and repartitioning and so on, but it broke so many things and resulted in me having to wipe my hard drive and start again from an old image of my hard drive. In the end I gave up.

It occurred to me I could use wubi, so I booted into Windows I installed with boot camp, installed wubi, and am running Ubuntu like that. I've looked at the FAQ and wiki and so on, and just can't get various things working.

I installed the nVidia 177 driver from Hardware Drivers, which works to some extent.

1. I cannot change screen brightness. Pressing F1 and F2 or Fn+F1 or Fn+F2 does nothing, except Fn+F1 opens help. Whatever I press, nothing changes.

2. The trackpad doesn't work how it should - no right click when I place two fingers on the trackpad and click, no scrolling with two fingers, etc. Tap-to-click works, but for some reason is a lot more sensitive than in Mac or Windows and I end up clicking when I don't want to.

3. The cursor goes a bit strange at random times. I can't take a screenshot of this - the cursor just appears normal in the screenshot, but it's like the cursor has been exploded. A photo:

4. I have a 24-inch monitor I often attach to the mac, and while it works to some extent, I seem to have a choice of compositing on one screen or no compositing on both screens. Lack of compositing aggravates me, and so does only using one screen.

Thanks
