Mmh, it seems it hasn't been mentioned here yet... So here I go:

A survey was started to explore the potential of open source gaming business. It consists of 20 detailed questions about how you would fund games and what acts of commercialism you consider moral for free software. Time to fill it in!

Note: Don't forget the age! (set to 0-9 by default)

Come on! Let's get at least a 1000 participants! :)

edit: enhanced the note about the age. ;)

Filled it out.

Some quesstions were lacking, but my stance is - if there's a valid reason why they need the money, and the team communicates it properly, I don't have an issue with supporting finanically.

Good one :) We could cover that as a meta question in the forum discussions though. Thus, discuss!

I for one wouldn't mind to spend a few bucks to help a bigger project, or even a solo/duo project; as long as it's good and thus fun to play, I may consider to help the project financially a bit. Although I don't mind getting a boxed DVD with a poster and stuff either :)

Steam-like advertisements (during the online loading screen etc.) seem like the best and least-annoying method of earning a few bucks to me. Isn't the GoogleAd API open anyway?

I'd be interested to know which ones exactly. Some people commented that the contribution questions weren't clear enough because there were too many factors which weren't being considered when the question was asked.

Basically ones with an "I would do blah if fah", but for me "fah" wasn't really an issue.

ie even the first one:

I would spend money to pre-order an open source game I was interested in if I got a DVD box with cover art and a DVD inside *

I'd pre-order an oss game anyway...

I'm all about advertising in games. To me that's the golden ticket always has been the path for it.

You had out a game for free and use advertising (between loading screens say a intel logo or this or that while the game is loading, or areas in game where it should be on a billboard or a sign or names of stores say in a game are real life stuff thats being payed for advertising)

Or even in some levels in games where u get to a room and a radio or tv is playing instead of some made up content advertisers could pay for the space for it. Which i think would keep games going longer support wise also. Cause if say 2 years down the line the game has say a active 200,000 people that play this many minute by this blah blah blah u might see more content updates for shooters etc.

Plus good bye piracy. Quake like, battlefield heroes. I look forward to seeing a lot more games like this in the future.

I also don't mind Cash shops aslong as the game has items in game for non payers to get that are equal to the pay for items i'm fine by that.

I just think on computers buying a game in the store for 50 bucks has become a dead horse that's been beaten to extinction. It's time for a change (also time to give linux some more support!) lol anyway i'll shut up now haven't had enough coffee at work yet so my brain is still a bit slow.

Update: Ah as for say ordering a game dvd i would do that. I really think games on all os's should start with doing as i said above loading screen ad's in game billboard adds (that go with the enviroment of the game of course) and depending on teh type of game possibly cash shops. Also offer stuff like dvd's as a extra way for people to contribute if your a huge fan of a game sell official dvd of the game on your website with extras etc.

But imo buying a game straight up old skool way in a store for 50 bucks is dead extinct for the most part. Specially if they start using trends like above will all see more support and imo more updates for a longer duration of the game if the game stays somewhat popular. so it could be a win win win for everyone involved.

Well it might not be the reason however the outcome is the same. You either will or you won't the reasons behind that decision don't really matter so much as the outcome.

By looking at the results we can go "ok that's a good response" or "People won't do that" and all open source projects can make a better decision down the line.

Don't really understand what you mean here.

Don't really understand what you mean here.

I click on the link, fill in the form, don't change the age setting, then return to this topic. The next line says "Note: Don't forget the age! (set to 0-9 by default)".

My point is KIAaze put "Note: Don't forget the age! (set to 0-9 by default)" below the link, meaning that I didn't see it until I had filled out the form.

Does that make sense?

I fixed it.
Better now? :lolflag:

Anyway, it's not so catastrophic if some people forget to give their age.

"I fixed it." - Thanks, first thing I noticed when I opened the page :P, but no, it isn't so catastrophic if someone puts the wrong age.
