Hello everyone, my first post!

I've been using Linux a year now, and ubuntu a few months.

After my initial fustrations with the early releases of KDE4 (what a bad time to start linux!) everythings been fairly smooth.

Then recently I decided it would be nice to get a webcam going for talking to relatives and friends in far off places.

I got a cheapo Sonix webcam and after much forum hunting and compiling was able to get the Microdia based cam at least working. Trouble it, as is often reported, the image was dark to a point of being practically unusable. (had to sit with a lamp on me like I was being interrogated!). Ended up giving this to a relative who was on dirty dirty Vista and it worked fine (of course).

Sorry, rambling a bit here, to cut to the chase can anyone recommend a webcam that (preferably 'just') works with Skype and isn't dark.

I'm on Ubuntu 8.1 and will move to Jaunty in April.

I'm aware of compatibility lists (e.g. http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/) but it's never clear how up to date they are and I've seen reports of cameras stopping working in the Jaunty alphas.

Would appreciate anyone with recent successful experience with a notebook webcam (pref tested on Jaunty) to post a reply with make/model details.

Thanks for listening.:D

Logitech e3500 worked out of box in case anyone is interested.

Only problem is I can't seem to have 2 video feeds on screen at once. I can see myself until connected on a video chat and then I can only see the person other end.
Tried looking for this and think it's either something to do with ATI mobile radeon graphics card, there only being 1 xv stream, or the version of skype is too advanced for the laptop.
Resigned to that not working and not too bothered, it's basically working.
Any comments appreciated.
It's a shame it appears Ubuntu is getting too popular that forum posts quickly get buried and admins pickup. When you post on other distro forums at least you always get some responses.
