I prefer Gnome - so Ubuntu... but it's not a 'different OS'...

the question has to be changed to "what is your favourite desktop, gnome kde or xfce?" because in terms of power, they are all kind of the same.
gnome is better for the eye and a lot more customizable , yet this is just my opinion.

they're the same OS they just wear a different coat.
And this question shouldnt be in the General Help section, it should be in the community section.

@thread starter, this is the general help forums, why dont u start these threads in community cafe forums instead?
This forum is supposed to be a helping forum, not chit-chat.

As others also wrote: what is better? What does it mean for you?
I have used Ubuntu for over a year now. In between I experimented with the KDE desktop but simply hate it. I can not get it to work like I want to. A simple example: in Gnome the extra keys on my keyboard are recognized and I can control the mediaplayers with those keys. In KDE they don't work.
I also installed Xfce once but this was also not to my liking.
Under the hood they are the same cause they all use the same Linux version.
I did uninstall Compiz after trying it for a day or so, cause I simply hate it. Why make Ubuntu look like Vista, which I also hate, because of the all the graphical ********? A simple desktop with launchers, a photograph of my daughters and windows opening and closing instantly. No time and CPU power wasted.

why would compiz make your desktop look like vista?
the effects it has are different (and better in my opinion) than vista's
(i'll have to say that i did the same with kde, installed it and then run away, it is not to my liking)

It's a matter of opinion, and what one feels suits their needs.

For me, Ubuntu is the best.
I'd like to use KDE instead of Gnome but KDE is too heavy for this machine.

Ubuntu ftw!
The other versions just don't seem the same, although edubuntu looks cool for kids.

I first tried Kubuntu when I switched to linux cause I thought it looked more windows-like (kinda true but useless :P), but now I'm running Ubuntu because you can make the design very mac-like. The only thing I miss a lot about Kubuntu is KDE's auto wallpaper changer and its transitions. I can't find any of that for Hardy!

wallpaper-tray can do the same that you are asking
i used to use it before i got bored of wallpapers changing every some seconds
i think get-deb has it if you want it

Any distro whose name ends in "ubuntu" is too slow and bloated....so none of the above.

rather strange to post this in the ubuntu forums don't you think?
i cannot say i agree though.
ubuntu gives as much as anyone can ask rather faster than most of the other mainstream distros

I stand by what I said. Just about anything out there is faster.
Ubuntu also has the worst KDE implemenation of all current linux distros.

IMO gnome looks awful and requires too much messing about to get it to my liking, KDE just looks so damn shiny and slick from the outset.
chriskin
March 7th, 2009, 10:52 AM
let's not make it another kde vs gnome thread :)
i can understand why you say that about gnome, but every time i tried kde in any distro of linux or bsd, i always bored after some seconds, gnome has kept me interested and i feel rather well about it. screenlets and compiz make it perfect

I found both gnome and kde to be functional for my home needs.
I use windows for my work because of a lack of fully fledged linux equivalents.

I used KDE for years up until KDE 4 . . . Holy Cow did they ever break it. I switched to Gnome and it is to my liking. I really wish KDE or someone would take care of all issue with KDE 4. I guess I could go back to 3.5

KDE4 is actually as slick as snot--the problem lies in in the gawd-awful implementation of it that Kubuntu does. Kubuntu's is the worst KDE out there, bar none. Hence my last post.

pc-bsd has a lot worse implementation of kde, yet i must agree, kubuntu doesn't do the best work possible

Well, what I meant was (and probably didn't explain well enough) is the fact that I don't like all these effects at all. When I want to close a window, I click on the X-button top-right and the window is closed. No "fancy" getting smaller, or flipping backwards, or whatever. When I was still using XP I also disabled all the graphics so the desktop would be very simple. I never used Vista because it's too "fancy", too many moving things, pop-up windows when you hover above the taskbar, etc. Not for me. The '98 look suits me just fine.
So when I said that Ubuntu with Compiz looks like Vista I meant all these fancy things. Which one is better is not relevant for me: they both are no good. Sorry programmers.

Kubuntu is a joke for KDE please do not base your KDE experience on Kubuntu, give OpenSuSE or Fedora 10 a try.

What is wrong with Kubuntu then? Is KDE on other distro's better, nicer, works better? What is the difference?

KDE elsewhere runs faster, runs smoother, has fewer bugs, and specifically also has more plasmoids easily available.
Canonical does virtually nothing to make KDE play nice with the Ubuntu base. They just grab the software from upstream and package and post it. The reason Ubuntu runs much better than Kubuntu is because Canonical actually puts effort into getting Ubuntu and Gnome to play nice.
The difference say between KDE on Arch and Kubuntu is night and day.

In my opinion, the gnome/kde/xfce comparing must be thought different from ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu. They are really different when installed in any other distro, because ubuntu has lots of adaptations, which doesn't happen much with debian, for example...

Precisely.
Folks on this board tend to declare that "KDE sucks" after having used it on Ubuntu...either not realising that Kubuntu is one of the worst KDEs, or not realising that the problems seen in Kubuntu are not KDEs fault by-and-large, or both.

just like gnome in other distros that is rather weak.
many distros try to make it look like windows , with the latest being Nova, which uses gnome in a rather insulting and ugly way

I picked kubuntu for the default apps (it is the only main and relatively up to date KDE distro that uses amarok 1.4.10 which is far superior to amarok 2). The Multirow taskbar is lovely as is folder view.

After a year of Kubuntu I'm ready to try other distros, I tried Opensuse yesterday afternoon and noticed a couple of KDE quirks as well as other problems which mean I won't be returning to it any time soon.
What would you recommend as a better KDE distro?

The small amount of dabbling in KDE that I've done, I prefer OpenSUSE's implementation and hey, you can really never go wrong with Arch if you feel adventurous.

The main reason that Kubuntu sucks compared to other KDE distros is that Debian hasn't packaged any part of KDE 4 prior to 4.2. Ubuntu basically takes Debian and adds testing + branding. Kubuntu is a look at what Ubuntu would be w/o Debian.
