Ubuntu 8.10, LAMP option selected on install, static IP, no firewall to the internet, with Webmin installed.

Web designer uploaded SQL database and Joomla front end today and come to find out SQL server will not authenticate users, not even with a simple test script.

This server previously had EHCP installed, but it was removed. Found some remnants of EHCP in an SQL conf that were causing it to not start. Cleared those and the server started up. Now I can't authenticate anyone, not even root, nevermind the developer's SQL name.

I really don't want to start from scratch on this one as Apache is functioning just fine.

I'm a relatively new user to Ubuntu, and while I find it relatively easy to navigate, problems like this leave me pockets-out and I really need this to work tomorrow.

Any/all help would be so greatly appreciated.

Did you ever fix this? Not sure that I can help, just hoping to document what happened, if possible.
