This will undoubtably be a massive thread in a matter of hours. My friend and I were discussing our favorite window managers (I'm a big fan of gnome) and I was wondering what other people like.

Gnome feels complete. XFCE...slightly less. I've never tried KDE.

Assuming you accept non-DE window managers, my favorite is evilwm. Light, clean, compatible, and controllable.
Light: it uses almost no RAM.
Clean: the code is very simple - less than 1700 lines of code.
Compatible: evilwm doesn't aggressively manage my windows, so it works with popups, file selectors, and the GIMP.
Controllable: evilwm offers total keyboard control - the only floating WM I know of that does so. You can move and resize floating windows without ever touching a mouse.
I also like dwm, ratpoison, and Pekwm. LXDE and Xfce are both good if stuff like panels is a must.

KDE, it looks pretty and is feature rich :]
Although I question the wisdom of polling the ubuntu forums

Well the ubuntu forums cover both kubuntu and xubuntu, which use different desktop environments than ubuntu's standard gnome. But I do see your point as the poll becomes lopsided in gnome's favor

I voted other, as I use a Openbox which is a window manager.
Of the DE's I'd choose Xfce, but these days I only use its panel in Openbox.

Gnome 2.24.1 (so far!): nice, clean and smooth. I've seen some KDE desktops before, but overall it's too 'full' and too customizable for me.

...and too customizable for me.
Egads. I didn't realize there was such a thing as too customizable.
I prefer Gnome for stability (though I too have toyed with KDE 4.2, and it's gorgeous), but I have a very difficult time dealing with small things in Gnome like the lack of true panel transparency. Where, you think, KDE's gui is too customizable, I would say that Gnome's is not nearly customizable enough.

In order of preference: XFCE first, then LXDE, followed by KDE (4.2).
Gnome? I'll pass.

Well, beauty is the eye of the beholder. :o
BTW, is it possible to install both and choose b/w each other when the GDM shows up?

It's been 2 days, and it's not yet massive.

Indeed it is, and in my opinion KDE 4.2 can be made to look better than anything the Gnome camp (of which I consider myself solidly a part) has come up with to date. That said, 4.2 will not see real usability until developers update existing apps to use the newer QT libs (I'm thinking specifically about VLC, but there are many many others).
I don't fail to find irony in relation to the havoc being wrought on the Jaunty Alphas by the new Python version.

Yes of course. Install either the full desktop via the metapackage (kubuntu-desktop, or xubuntu-desktop) or choose the individual packages yourself, then the new UIs should show up in the "Session" menu in GDM.

I really want a real LCARS window manager ;_;
As of now, my fav is Openbox, though KDE is second, and Gnome probably come sin last.

No really, I did mean it only as friendly ribbing. How quickly text communication goes awry. Explains so many people getting shot in the 19th Century eh?

GNOME, indeed. It was the first I used, and I can't get out of it nowadays.
Once I gave a chance to KDE, but gave up fast.
I already like XFCE, but let it evolve a little more.

Unless you're a ninja cow trained in the deadly arts of kung-fu ;)
KDE3 is personally my favorite though GNOME is about tied with it for me.
Fluxbox and Openbox are my favorite full-featured light-weights (and XFCE)...ummm I should stop now before the list goes on :)

Favorite Desktop Environment is KDE, but my favorite overall Window Manager is Openbox (which is NOT a desktop environment). I voted for KDE, since that technically answers the question most accurately, but I'm typing this from Openbox.

Currently I run KDE 4.2 on my desktop box (which is finally getting to where I like it) but my wife uses Gnome and I think it's more polished then my KDE. I also would like to try out E17 on a real box. I disliked Fluxbox when I used Fluxbuntu.
