Dear Ubuntu,

I like your style now that you've grown up to be 8.10. You and my Compaq nx8220 laptop are apparently quite happy living together. However, how am I to convince you I have two screens, not one? You have absolutely no problem with the built-in LCD, but why can't you see there's also a 40' Samsung LE40A656 LCD plugged in by a simple video cable? What's even more frustrating, your evil neighbour, the WinXP, is having no problems with the other screen and can switch to it with a key pressed or two...

Sincerely,

Halibutt

Hmmm, I installed Mythubuntu and the matter is now solved (at least to some extent), as the screens now run in dual view mode.

But out of curiosity, how do I do it in clean Ubuntu?
Cheers

That depends on what gpu is in your machine. There are vastly different answers if you have nvidia or intel or ati or via and you have been somewhat obtuse about telling us.

if you have an nvidia card, just do gksudo nvidia-settings
and configure in there.
