New Linux convert here wondering about what security programs I should get.

In Windows I ran AVG Free Edition (with the internet security), as well as Spybot and Windows Registry Repair Pro for maintenance. Are there similar programs for Ubuntu (preferably freeware) and where can I find them? Does Ubuntu even need those sort of programs? What do you recommend?

AVG and all its cohorts are useless regardless of your OS. Use NoScript, don't install from outside the default repositories unless you know what you are doing, and never believe something that looks too good to be true.
