Hello all!

I have Mythbuntu up and running, and I love it! I like all of the default settings, and don't want to change anything...I like it booting into XFCE and auto-starting MythFroentend on boot...this helps when the Wife has to reboot, or there is a power-outtage; it just comes back up.

That being said, I'd like to have Gnome installed so I can set up a VNC server, and VNC into the box into a Gnome environment and do various tasks while the family is using the Mythfrontend.

So, is it possible to install the Gnome desktop environment, but still have the Mythbuntu box boot XFCE and auto-start Myth on startup?

I'm nervous to install Gnome, because I don't want to mess up the auto-startup settings.

Again, I just need Gnome for the VNC session (I'm not a big fan of working in the XFCE environment).

Any ideas or help?

Thanks

Well, if default myth worked, a reinstal shouldn't be too painful. LOL.

Seriously, I think it should work fine to install Gnome Destop. Never tried that, but when I installed KDE Desktop in my Gnome Ubuntu, the only time I saw KDE was when I selected it to boot from login menu. Given that, I'd think it would be similar for your setup.

Yeah! Well, there was a bit of setup involved; I'd hate to have to reinstall!

Thanks for your input though...I'm trying to get the courage to do this, I'd like to see if anybody else has done the same thing.

Thanks!

You can install Gnome but still have the default session be xfce. As a matter of fact I don't think it changes the default session automatically so there should be no change at all. If it does, all you need to do is log out and change the session to xfce and it will ask you if you want to make that the default session and you just click yes. I have done this on all three of my machines.

Myth works exactly the same in gnome and xfce.

thanks Crez,

Did you install Ubuntu via the Myth-control center, or via the package manager?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure I used mythbuntu-control-centre. They should both work the same way.
