They must be high, because people never recommend old releases of Ubuntu for older computers...

They are the same.

New releases don't mean they run slower, some even run faster.

Many people do not recommend older releases because sometimes its difficult to get support and updates. As for system requirements, they are listed here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements).

Dapper is still supported until June and it uses Kernel 2.6.18 I think, it might work on your hardware but your mileage may vary especially if you have a really recent computer. BTW 6.06 was the best release ever IMO!
