no sound in 64 bit ubuntu 8.10 with dell dimension c521

Ubuntu is running perfectly on this computer except for not having no sound.

I found a thread here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=670318 that explains how to fix this but it has not worked for me. The first time ubuntu started after applying the fix the startup sound played but after that whenever any sound should be playing I just hear crackling. Im not sure how to go about fixing this at all.

sound works now. Unfortunately I don't know what i did to help others who come along this problen.

I have the same problem. I recently installed Ubuntu, and all that I got for sound was the startup sound.
I'm not sure on how to fix this, as I am a complete newb at Ubuntu.

what computer are you using and what version of ubuntu did you install?
