If you want client/server for running programs with sharing internet you may be after LTSP (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP) and/or LDAP (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenLDAPServer).

What are the clients running for OS?

the client machines will be a mix between windows xp, windows vista and ubuntu desktop version.

thanks Pete.
