Obviously Amarok is a better choice. Media Monkey doesn't run natively and you have to pay for it. Personally I use Listen.

I love Media Monkey for Windows! Fast mp3 ripping, tag management, library managment. it's got all i need. Just need substitution for Ubuntu - have just tried Rythmbox, but it's just a basic player.

Just starting Amarok for the first time: hope it's gonna be anything close to Media Monkey!

edit: first encounter was OK, trying to install some encoding scirpts..

I used MM on windows and was 100% satisfied. I know that there as been a higher demand to MM on Linux and you can actually go on the MM website forums to vote on a demand for Linux. I have not tried amarok yet. Can you use it on unbuntu 8.10 amd64?

I need a music manager that also has proper tag mgmt like MediaMonkey. Amarok doesn't seem to do that properly. I want to be able to pull a tag from a website to update a music file correctly. The autoorganize feature of MM is also quite handy and I can have files go wherever I want them based on specific criteria.

I'm using Karmic and can't get MM to work on Ubuntu.

Amarok - it's free, easy to add scripts and saves bandwidth as it's on a default install

Not owning a copy of windows, I've never tried Media Monkey. But I just have to say, as a fan of Amarok 1.4, the new Amarok is a disaster. It's loaded with bugs, and the interface keeps getting worse the more they tinker with it. It's latest trick is to stop after each song in the playlist. At this point I am open to suggestions for other (non kde) media players.

*gets frustrated whenever someone thinks *buntu's version of a package is the only version*

The up to date Amarok is not broken. I can only assume *buntu's version is. For version 2.2.0 works without issue in KDEmod.

However, I would suggest Exaile for your situation.

MediaMonkey seems to me to be a better program, and i wouldn't expect otherwise due to the greater amount of development that has occurred for the windows platform. The kde4 Amarok is getting better very quickly (especially if you use git://gitorious.org/amarok/amarok.git), so i would stick with it, but i'm never keen on downtalking freeware such as mediamonkey - whoever developed it is great!

Musicbrainz Picard works great for taggin although I'm having issues with getting the album art to work. Files are renamed if you desire after being retagged.

Amarok has given me nothing but problems on my machine, I abandoned it for song bird, I only played with media monkey a little, but i still liked more than Amarok

I don't like Amarok. It's not as easy to use as some make it out to be nor as flexible. It's a GUI, I should be able to do stuff without writing scripts.

Media Monkey is the best application out there which deals with huge music collection and also for its excellent iPod support. Amarok is good but too buggy and sluggish with huge collections.

For me, in the 2 years since I switched, I found nothing like MM.
So under Intrepid I eventually followed MMs forum advice on how to get MM working in WINE and it worked great, for 6 months until I installed Karmic. It seemed ok for a few days but I realised it was quite buggy.
So I casually tried uninstalling in WINE and reinstalling.
Didn't work. Seems the uninstall left lots of bits of the process untouched, because when I tried reinstalling most of the original changes I'd made were still there but MM no longer works.
I really miss it.
I think I've tried almost every linux native music manager and hated them all for various specific reasons but generally because they are years behind.
Banshee, Amarok 1.5 & 2, Songbird (which I hated the most as it led to a deletion of my entire library, lucky I had a backup), Listen, Quod Libet, Rhythmbox, Exaile, gmusicbrowser.
