Hope the title is ok :) anyways this is the basic layout of Ubuntu:

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/download.php?content=32884&id=1

Im not really a graphic artist, but one thing though..would this involve sorta redesigning the Ubuntu logo? Maybe making is look a little flashier, glossier, 3D? Just some ideas...

Branched off from: Designed for Ubuntu. I love parody. :) (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=71614)

The results of the FreeBSD logo design competition were pretty sweet as you can see:

We should do something like this with the Ubuntu logo :)

I knew if I just threw it out there someone would make a thread before I. ;)

You should reference the other thread (to give this one context) and post a link in the other for this one.

Ill work on some stuff tomorrow. :)

Whe're not tryin to re-do the complete art. Just a custom case badge. Not just a parody.

Wait. I think I see what you are sayin. Maybe just glossy-up the logo?

pretty sweet

Pretty sweet? Those are MAD! I wonder who could have done that because graphics people tend to use W$ only.

I'd just like to say that I'm super excited about seeing what this effort ends up producing. I LOVE excellent graphics and I think Ubuntu would be incredibly well served by the sort of results like the FreeBSD work yielded. Thanks people!

There was an image in the post, but imageshack didn't work yesterday so I had to use some ****** hosting.

I uploaded it to my school's server:

Wow, that is a really cool concept! What did you use to create it? I like that it gets away from the typical white / gray background and really stands out.

Sorry for not posting so long. I created it in Inkscape. I got the inspiration from a candy wrapper.

Personally, i think it's a nice piece of work, but it looks more like the 70's than the competitor to Windows Vista..

Feel very free to do Kubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu versions! :)

Sure thing, here's Kubuntu real quick. I'll do the others if these two prove popular. ;)

Those both look amazing! My only comment is to make sure you put the TM next to the logo and add tiny text at the bottom indicating ubuntu is a trademark of canonical, otherwise using them is against canonical's policy and therefore technically illegal.

They look incredible though!

Jolva
January 20th, 2006, 01:45 PM
Ok i fixed that up. I was mostly playing around though, as you can see below they don't exactly scale very well.

Yeah, they look really great! What did you use to make them? GIMP? Cuz someone should try to convert them into inkscape.

Jolva
January 20th, 2006, 04:49 PM
Gimp? No... I can hardly use Gimp yet unfortunetly. I did this with Macromedia Fireworks and Photoshop on my q;) I've only been using (K)ubuntu for about 3 days now.

I'll play with them a bit more and get them more scalable.

They're amazing! :)

If you removed the K from the ubuntu one and maybe make the legal text a bit smaller, they would be next to absolutely perfect!

Whoops! That was a copy and paste mistake there. Actually, I think I can safely remove the "trademark of canonical" line at the bottom. It would be nearly impossible to have that visable on a 1/2 inch sticker, and I haven't come across another case badge that has a full copyright statement. I'll revise them over the weekend.

I would ask them first, there's an email address in the wiki under logo issues or something. When I emailed them those were the guidelnes they gave me. Although I can't imagine them suing over something positive and as long as the TM is there it's labeled as trademarked I guess.

Ok, here's the newest revision. I would have posted this sooner, but once the boards came back I had my hands full. This one (to me at least) doesn't look as good blown up, but once scaled I think it looks pretty sharp.

If this ever gets passed just screwing around I'll chat up the cats at Canonical and make sure we're legal ;)

Damn, they are really fresh and powerfully good looking. You should join in with the art crew! I'd really like to spread these pictures out where i'm staying on different websites, if it's okay with you of course :), so is it possible for you to post the pictures cut out seperately with no white hanging around?

They're great but I think they have too many gradients.

EDIT: I updated my badge

Ok, I killed the drop shadow and added a light boarder. I hope this is what you ment :p . Glad you like em. Should we ever decide to turn these into real stickers we'll get permission first, then I'll redo these in a vector format such as Illustrator.

Illustrator? Try Inkscape. It's free software (free as in freedom). I personally use free software just because it's free.

Jolva
January 26th, 2006, 01:51 PM
Interesting, looks like it can import/export the AI and EPS file formats. I only suggested Abobe Illustrator because I know most printing companies can work with the EPS standard. I'll take a look at Inkscape, thanks commodore. ;)

commodore

I think it would be easy to print svg because you can get Inkscape for free, but I don't think companies want to install more apps.

Is it ok if I use one of these images on my website? I already have the "powered by apache" banner at the bottom and I wan't to add something mentioning ubuntu.

Wow!!! I never noticed this thread, although I'm teh author of this one (thanks to odin1965): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=958942

Please! Jolva & commodore - your work looks marvelous. Would you be willing to do a few designs like that (and give the svgs of the previous) for the Marketing Team? If you made various formats, we would then try to get the best printed out. Please check out the above thread and the slightly older http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=960193
YOU make ME happy ツ

Jenda

Well, ATM you can print them out yourself.
In the future - I'll work during the summer on getting stickers made for the Marketing Team and then we'll choose the best there are and have them printed (I can fund that if I manage to sell them later (with no profit, or only as much as is needed to cover the cost of the stickers that don't sell))
