I receive this error message when I try to open any application, folder or file:
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)

How can I repair this problem without losing my data?

So what have you installed/changed since the last time your system was working correctly? Do you backup your system regularly?

You can try running the recovery mode.
when grub first starts hit ESC. this will bring up the full boot menu.
highlight (click) recovery mode. hit enter.

when that finishes a box will open giving you several choices,
select Fix Broken packages. hit enter.
when that finishes select continue normal boot and hit enter.

Hope that works for you.
