I have a static sound coming over headphones on my Samsung NC10 running xubuntu and alsa drivers. It's not constant like a volume setting being too high, it's more like a gerbil's in the machine munching on a carrot every 5-60 seconds. Wondering if this is a driver issue or a mechanical design issue in the laptop wiring. Any advice (other than not to use headphones; the speakers in the NC10 are less than extraordinary)?

is the annoying sound still there if you unplug the power adaptor? ive had experiences with my soundcard reacting to electricity from the wall.

Yes, it is still there when operating on battery. It's an intermittent scratchy static noise, no pattern in time, just the sound. Doesn't seem to be related to disk usage or cpu load either. Good tip, though.

And as a matter of fact, the volume if the static doesn't change when changing the volume levels, It's the same volume all of the time, when something's playing or not.
