Installed ubuntu a week ago and i am still getting to grips with it. having previously used windows 95-xp, could anyone tell me whether utils like scandisk and defrag are available for ubuntu? mine is now a single boot system and boy is it fun!!

defrag is not really necessary in linux, and scandisk is replaced, more or less, by fsck, which is scheduled to run on your disks during boot automatically. (I think the default is every 30 mounts). You can learn more about a specific command/app by running "man <command-name>" in a terminal (example: man fsck)

Linux/ubuntu do not require near the maintenance of windows, so sit back and enjoy!

I'm finding that ubuntu is running things that i couldn't even get drivers for in windows-how can this be?
