whenever i click on the video files, for ex; avi files vlc player or any other player just pops up and suddenly escapes to nowhere... i dont know where it goes... its not there in panel or desktop/not minimised.....
i am really worried about it....

should i have to install any codec or any drivers???? i havent updated the softwares yet..which is around 350mb..... what could be the real reason for this????

be sure you installed w32codecs.

Please post the output of terminal when vlc etc closes.I am guessing it is xorg.conf type problem

I find it useful to install the ubuntu restricted extras package. It contains many video codecs, the flash plugin for firefox and a lot of audio codecs.

Also, try installing another video player, such as mplayer. I once had a problem similar to you, and it stopped once I started using mplayer. Using a different player will treat the symptoms, and it might cure the problem.

Best of luck,
