Are drivers necessary for extra ram to be recognized?
I'm not sure why my new gb of memory isn't being recognized.

No. No drivers are needed for RAM.

If your ram is not recognized, ensure that it is the correct type (I believe the G4 takes pc133 sdram, but not certain) and that the system supports the quantity of ram added.
Also, the Mac may be using ECC, which has to be added in matching modules.

After checking the above, you could also try running memtest at the grub prompt. Try to let this run at least overnight.

This is the ram that goes under the keyboard and wifi correct? If it is the right ram and it is installed correctly osx and Ubuntu will both register it.
