If this section were done away with.

I can confidently say I'm not alone in my opinion.
It just creates a mess, for a variety of reasons.

I am no fan of the Mailing List section, either.
Then again, I am just one person (that has never participated in it.)
What does everyone else think?

I'd say:
remove it from the 'new posts' list.

I have read and participated in discussions there. Removing it would mean losing one form of contact between these forums and the wider Ubuntu community.
I would rather see it kept and ignored by those who aren't interested.

I completely agree here. Somtimes I like seeing the mailing list but I would rather be able to turn it on/off.

I would even like to see a mailing list forum portal for the edubuntu mailing list and the doc team mailing list. The former is because a lot of non-computer-savvy people will be getting more and more interested in edubuntu in the coming months and forums are easier to handle than mailing lists. The latter because the forums are a big part of documentation.
You always have the choice. The problem with mailing lists is actualy on their end. the forums can cause an awful lot of spam for them. (I mean real bona-fide email-relay spam, and not just a lot of posts - posts are good)

User CP (http://ubuntuforums.org/profile.php?do=editoptions) > "Forums To Exclude From View" > Select the mailing list forum.
It can prove to be useful at times, and if it bothers someone, he/she can easily exclude it from his/her forumslist.

I'd say:
remove it from the 'new posts' list.
The problem isn't on this end, it's on the other end. The ffeds sent from here to the mailing lists are messy.

If you don't use the lists yourself, you'd probably not understand. :-)
I use both.

I find Usenet far more organized and easy to use than web-based forums. Mailing lists come in second.
I've only gotten used to web forums over the past few years because they seem to be taking over.
They do have thier advantages. But overall my preferences are:
Usenet (http://angrykeyboarder.blogs.friendster.com/yet_another_of_my_blogs/2005/11/the_death_of_us.html)
Mailing Lists

Why is it not enough that you can exclude it from your view?

I just wish there was a way to exclude it from searches. Is there?

I'm not sure if the quick search takes the "excludes forums from view" into account, but I assume not.
In which case there's only a temporary solution to this: use the advanced search and select to search in all forums minus the mailinglist forums.

Yes, see post number 8.
It is like the section is not even there.

Yes, see post number 8.
It is like the section is not even there. I can assure you that does not work for unanswered post searches, a search I do quite often.

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/search.php , too bad it doesn't really work (yet) but there's an option to save the search preferences on the bottom, maybe in the next release it will fully work.

Fair enough. I nevery used that.
However, just about all I use is the "new posts" search and it certainly works for that.

Matthew couldn't be more right. For some people that form of communication is favored. Ubuntu should try to maximize communication capabilities not get rid of them. If anything I think we should add ways for people to communicate. And as this thread points out if you don't like it you can get rid of it.

I do, I just don't get why you're asking for removal instead of a fix.

I came in at about day twelve of the forum's existance ( I think) The mailing lists were already there. The forums became official three or four months later.
I do not think there are any listed criteria for a forum to meet to be official.

Any chance of the "exclude from view" excluding the mailing lists from the "unanswered posts" search, as many of the "threads" in the mailing lists appear as "unanswered" even though they are themselves answers...?
