Hi I've got 5.10 on my laptop which has a firewire/IEEE1394 port.
I have a samsung MiniDV camcorder and I want to transfer the video & sound to my laptop to save and edit.
Do I need to download any video editing software? If so, what program(s) would you recommend.
The camcorder came with its own program but it's a piece of crap and only works in Windows...
Thanks!

What happens when you plug in the video camera to the computer, via firewire or whatever?

Kino is your best (and only) bet really as it captures, edits, and exports all in one package. It should work fine, though I don't think it will have as fancy of an interface as a Win program (but having never used anything similar in windows I cannot be a good judge there). Captureing is quite easy, but editing/encoding/etc confuses me a bit.
There are numerous posts in the forums concerning Kino, and firewire issues (device permissions, etc) so I'd recommend a look around there to see

Kino, is certainly the most popular choice. Last I heard The GIMP was working on adding video tools as well, might be worth checking out their site.

I've got Kino installed (via automatrix, which BTW is highly recommended) and also Cinelerra but are having trouble with the firewire being detected etc.
I'm still working on it. :)
