I just installed a 8.10 from the alternate CD. The DVD-Drive doesn't seem to be working. If I insert a DVD, it shows up on the desktop, I can open it and see the files but trying to play doesn't work neither with Mplayer nor with VLC media player which I installed from the repositories. Anyone able to help me out?

In the Multimedia & Video sections of these forums, check out the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video How-To. I follow all the steps from top to bottom whenever I install any version of Ubuntu. It sets things up very nicely with no problems. Then I install the beta drivers from nVidia for my old GeForce MX100/200 card. I can't stress enough how important these steps are to bringing your system up to happy-mode.

Is it with any type of DVD media, or just DVD movies? Try following the directions here:

The ones you should need are parts 1 and 4. Try that out and see if it works.
