Hi Everyone,

I was hoping I could get some advice on ubuntu 8.10 server compatible hardware. I have a small budget, so I want to make sure I get the best possible gear for the least expense.

I plan on running either 8.04 or 8.10, and the server will be doing the following mainly:

1) local file server
2) local virtual server (vmware)
3) local music server
4) LAMP (I am a web developer, so this will be very busy when testing)
5) IMAP mail mirror
6) print server
7) personal image server
8) Bazaar repo
8) I may also want to attach a screen and watch movies from the same system lol, running just a lightweight wm

...among other small things! Basically it is for my personal home use and for friends and family to connect to only, but running a virtual machine while all this is happening can get busy from my experience.

What I was thinking of doing was something like this:

1) AMD Athlon 64 X2 3.0 Ghz 6400+ (AM2 Dual Core CPU)

2) Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H (Mobo)

3) 4GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800 (RAM) -- (Can I use faster RAM with this mobo and CPU combo?)

4) 750 GB (SATA HDD, 7200 rpm with 16 mb cache) + another 300 GB (SATA)

5) Any decent DVD Rewriter (fast), SATA

6) 600W power and case (do I need this much?)

7) What sort of cooling do you recommend for a server of this nature?

What do you guys think about this motherboard? Could you recommend something better (and more linux friendly?) ...

Thanks for all the help!

It sounds like total overkill, so it should work fine.

Cheers,

That all looks good. No special cooling needed. The stock fans on the cpu should be fine.
