Dell Inspiron 500m. Need help

I have downloaded xubuntu successfully onto my laptop. I can log in but after about twenty seconds my computer freezes. Two lights next to the power button start blinking.
I have to turn off my laptop by holding down the power button.
I want to know if anyone has any ideas, thanks.

Have you done a hardware check?

Ubuntu 7.10 (since upgraded to 8.04) works on my old 500m. Although the mouse pointer intermittently misbehaves (I think this is due to residual xorg settings from 7.10 - planning reinstallation 8.04).
