hi all,

i have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop, and i use Ubuntu for quite a while. the laptop is new (5 months old) and working great :)

the problem that bothered me from the moment i got it was the touchpad. in windows xp, which is also on the machine, unused, it works great. however, on Ubuntu it sucks, and sometimes doesn't respond at all(!), which can drive a person mad, when not using an USB mouse..

will be glad for all the help i can get.. :(

thanks in advance..

Uri

I have exactly the same problem with the 1525. I see lots of complaints about the touchpad on various forums, and I notice Dell has an improved driver (for Windows). I don't know what to do about the Ubuntu problem. I have fiddled with the touchpad settings, but I can't find settings that work well.

Add me to the list of people with 1525 touchpad problems. I specifically bought a Dell laptop for my wife because I thought it would have been reliable.

At this point I would not recommend a Dell to anyone for Linux or Windows.

Odd. We have a 1525 here with a fresh install of Intrepid, and it's fine with the touchpad. We have the "tap for a click" disabled, and use the touchpad buttons instead, so I don't know if that has anything to do with anything, but otherwise it's absolutely fine.

go ahead and add me to the list with a inspiron 1000. The touchpad is erratic and is basically unusably in Jaunty.

What's weird is in the login screen, the touchpad works perfect. But it's like it's not getting recognized at the same time because there are no touchpad options under pref -> mouse.

I've had my 1525 for almost a year - have run three different versions of Ubuntu and haven't had the first problem........

I also have had my Dell Inspiron 1525 for two weeks now, fresh install of Jaunty and mousepad worked great out of the box. Just sensitive enough for touch, tapping and clicking works perfectly.

Only 'problem' I have is that it's too eager! :) I'm struggling to turn off the pad when I'm typing, (the well known infamous "syndaemon -S -t -t" solution doesn't work for me).

Anyone have any ideas on that?

try syndaemon -i 0.5 -d

This laptop sucks, the speakers are a tiny joke, the screen is falling off (a screw literally flew across the room when I was opening it, the del-ubuntu kernel is unusable and the fan is squeaking already. not only that but you have to take apart the entire laptop to oil the fan.

garbage.

runs "not dell" ubuntu fine, and DELL please stop making plastic crap.

for a friking grand youd think it would not fall apart in 6 months.

Ariccanfly, is yours a refurbished one ?

I've had mine for 1+ year and it's working great !

If your sound is too low, try adjusting audio settings (Master, Front, PCM to 100%) using HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) settings. Sometimes there are settings non-visible (not ticked in options) that ruin your sound settings.

Too bad about that screw and that fan... sounds strange to me (are you a power user? do you place it on others than leveled tables and so on ?)

Anyways, if it's under warranty, use it !!

Regards

PS: Anyways, its speakers are small and no great thing

I'm having similar problems with my touchpad. I have just instalIed Ubunto 9.04 today and no adjustments to my mouse/touchpad settings seem to stop it from being intermittently erratic in movement, oh and my sound doesn't work. Curious if anyone has found a solution to these issues? (for the record, I haven't researched the sound issue yet - there may already be a post on this)

Thanks for any help you can provide. :)

UPDATE: The Dell 1525 touchpad issue seems to exist for Ubuntu 9.10 as well (or perhaps it's a new issue). The touchpad is actually not working at all for me since I've installed Koala.

The low speaker sound issue, however, is easily remedied in the alsa sound mixing by turning the Front setting to 100%, as previously posted by another forum contributor - THANKS!! :).

Was working fine on an Inspiron 1520 in 9.04 but has now completely gone after updating to 9.10.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Koala and I don't have any touchpad or sound issues :p
