The purple is an illusion caused by the subpixel rendering and/or font hinting. </educated guess>

Pop into System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Font (tab) -> Advanced (button) and play around with the Hinting and Subpixel Order and maybe it will fix your problem...

You don't need Gimp for that, just use xmag or any other screen magnifier...

You can just zoom in in firefox - at higher zoom levels the "m"s start to show colours.

So is this a bug?

In Terminal go to Settings> Edit Current Profile.... Click on the Appearance tab. At the bottom is a setting for Font. Try different fonts and sizes and try clicking Smooth fonts to see if there is any difference. I use DejaVu sans mono size 9 and have smoothing enabled and have perfectly clear text. But then again., I am using an LCD with 1440x900 resolution.
