I've been playing WoW on Linux for over a year now and generally have had good luck with getting it to run well. The last few weeks I've had some issues come up and I need some help figuring out. First off here's my specs... Intel i7 920 64bit with 6 gigs of ram and an ATI 4870HD card on 64bit Ubuntu 8.10 with all updates installed.

The crashes can sometimes happen in busy combat situations but I can easily go for a night or two without any crashes. I've also noticed that when talking to vendors and walking away or closing it can crash. Once again it's not always but it seems to be a factor. Now if it was a simple crash where it popped up the wow crash error box and I clicked okay I'd be happy. Unfortunately when it crashes the screen just freezes and I get the Ubuntu arrow cursor.

If I'm persistant enough I can move the cursor around the still frozen screen of wow and watch it change into the resize cursor when I move over any desktop window edges. Using this method I can guess where the wow error box is and click on the okay button and then hit enter and I'm suddenly back at the desktop. From here it's trivial to restart wow and get back to playing.

Sometimes this method does not work and I can't find the error window. I've tried using CTRL-ALT and left and right arrows to change desktops but my screen doesn't change. I know I'm on a different desktop because I can see the resize cursor appear in different places. So now I think that I'll be smart and pop over to another terminal and end task. So I do CTRL-ALT-F2 and login to another terminal. On this terminal I have no problems seeing the text or anything. I run "top" and then end the task of wow.exe. I can kill the process without any problem everything seems okay.

So next I hit CTRL-ALT-F7 to swap to my desktop. Here's the crazy part... my screen is now only showing I'm guessing 400x200 pixals. Basically the top left corner of my screen is blown up to the entire screen. I can move the mouse off of here and the cursor will continue but I can't easily interact with much because the screen won't move and I can only see maybe the top left two icons on my desktop. If I try to do CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to reset X it all just freezes up. It's not totally frozen because I can hit CAPS LOCK and the light changes but I can't find any combination of inputs to get any sort of response. The only thing that works is the power button and when I hit it once the computer goes into shutdown procedure.

If anyone has any sort of help or advice on this situation I would be happy to try it out.
