Hi Guys
I'm still having problems installing Hardy Heron (8.04 right?)on a Dell C640 running Windows 2000 I've been working up the courage to partition the disc manually and attempt a dual boot installation, but after a bit of checking around it seems I can install within windows using Wubi I was about to wade in but thought I'd see if anyone can quickly tell me if this is good idea as Wubi doesn't seem to be official Ubuntu software Any tips would be great
Thanks!

You should be able to install ubuntu within windows and all the files required would be stored in C:\Ubuntu. After you restart the computer, you will have a choice to boot into Windows or Ubuntu (Just like a manual partition dual boot). If you choose to remove Ubuntu afterwords, simply use Add/Remove to uninstall it and remove the Ubuntu folder from your C:\ drive. So this is a fail-safe way to see how your machine would run ubuntu without the live cd.

I installed WUBI to my Old Dell Precision 220
(Win2000 - 512ram P3 Nvidea)

I'd recommend burning the supported iso to disk 1st and let WUBI grab it from your Optical drive- It'll be much faster than letting WUbi DL from the server.
Give it as much space as possible! ( I chose 15GB, but I wish I'd have gone with 30GB)
I'm on the second day of full mods (Ultimate) + ComPiz + Crossover Pro etc.

No Boot Problems to report even after crashing some unsupported programs through Crossover.

Once Fully configured there are ways to install your Fully Configured Ubuntu to an external bootable USB drive.

WuBi + Ubuntu 8.10 - Fully Modded and Loving it!

Wubi is useful if you are unconvinced by the LiveCD.

It does leave some idiosyncrasies, so probably best to look in the Wubi section of this forum for help (and let people know you installed with Wubi).
