i am using virtualbox ose in ubuntu 8.10 and using windows xp sp3 as guest.
when i boot into xp virtualbox shutdown automatically. can any one reply to my mail gajapathy87@yahoo.com

Do you get an error ?

If not, try running it from the terminal and post the output.

VBoxManage startvm WindowsXP

Use the name of your vm instead of WindowsXP.
