I purchased a Sony SR100 hard drive camcorder 3 years ago. I have an old Win XP box that I use as a file server and to burn my home movies directly from he camcorder.

I want to start using the camcorder with my Ubuntu laptop exclusively. I am not looking for any advanced solutions. I need only simple editing tools if any.

I believe my camcorder records in MPEG 2, so what is my best bet to capture the videos off of the camcorder and to burn my home videos?

I've seen many posts on Everio's mod files, but nothing on Sony's file format (if there is one). I do not know if Sony mucks up their files with proprietary junk the way the Everios do.

I read that your sony has a digital video/audio out and that it supports mpeg2. So it should be easy to connect your cam with usb. The computer will see it as mass storage and you should be able to copy over your files to the hard disk. From there you have different editor that you could check out : kino, kdenlive, lives. Later on if you wich more features you could look at blender VSE or cinelerra. Lumiera is a project to keep an eye on.
