I am a noob running Ubuntu 8.10 and VirtualBox 2.1.2 on a Dell Dimension 8400. I am attempting to install Windows XP in VirtualBox and it starts out ok as I get a screen saying it is inspecting my computer's configuration and I hear the CD ROM drive spinning. Then I get the blue screen with "Windows Setup" but then nothing...for a long time; no CD ROM drive spinning or anything.

Any step by step assistance to resolve this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Does it ask you if you need to install extra drivers on floppies?

It doesn't ask for anything. The only other thing I see is when the Windows Setup screen first appears there is a brief prompt at the bottom to press F6 to intall a third party RAID or SCSI driver. But even hitting F6 (for the heck of it) yields nothing.

Solved. I installed a new machine and started over. It installs now. I don't know what settings the old one had to make it not work. Perhaps not enough room on the HD.
