KDE uses too much of resources, GNome is ok. But, Xfce is better. It is fast. You can do pretty much do all the work you do in any other desktop environment in this too.

Installing: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallingXubuntu
XFCE with Enlightenment window manager: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=101066
Xuubntu with Thunar file manager: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=95934
Enlightened Xubuntu Mac OS X Style: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=98067
[Check more for enlightenment themes. You can have Aqua theme, Jaguar background, MacOS X icons...]
Enlightenment themes: http://themes.freshmeat.net/browse/60/
XFCE programs description: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/x/xfce.html

Few problems I faced:
1. Accessing shared files: Use Xfsamba4, an samba front end.
2. Aqua theme: Border problems. Check more at theme webpage in freshmeat.
http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/aqua_/
3. File Manager: XFCE's default file manager sucks. Try thunar (Links given above). It is pretty good.
4. Enlightenment: You may have to purge cache and restart enlightenment for testing new sounds, modified theme files, etc.

Thanks man.

I tried running KDE 3.5 on a p3 500 / 256 mb ram, vanilla ubuntu 5.10 server install. I like KDE but it's a HOG on resources. It completely choked man.
Gnome is pretty resource heavy too, so i didn't even try this.
I thouhgt i'll give xubuntu a chance, and man did I notice the diffrence! :D

It ran flawlessly even though xfce has som shiny graphics/effects. Nice minimalistic media player and synaptic.

Overall i'm very impressed, Xubuntu maintainers and XFCE people!
(just a tip - watch the flash demo at http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de/. cool stuff.)

Good stuff here... would an admin consider sticky-ing this post for those of us interested in Xubuntu? :KS
