View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu intrepid....sound just seems to "die"

I'm not sure what is hanging up where, but this seems to happen randomly and the only fix that seems to work is a reboot.

Does someone know a command line sequence I can run to reinitialize or reboot the sound card / sound server?

There are two possibilities. Either some application blocks the card and so PulseAudio can't continue to work and you lose sound on your desktop or PulseAudio is crashing, and again obviously you lose your sound. In both cases a reboot of corrects the problem.

To check if PulseAudio crashes, the next time you lose your sound check in your syslog for any error messages from PulseAudio. To access it, go to System → Administration → System Log. If you don't see it in the list of logs, add it by selecting File → Open and go to the /var/log folder.

If you think an application blocks the sound card, then when this happens, check what applications you are running (the ones that produce sound, obviously). One of them must be the culprit.

I'm thinking it's crappy web embedded sound aps that stay running when firefox crashes.
