Yes,I'm a D.

Although the wallpaper for Intrepid Ibex was not too bad. But I dislike Ubuntu Human theme very much. I think most people change that right away. I've installed the Mac theme (without the dock) but for a while I used the New Wave (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=newwave-xfce.png) theme, which is pretty good.

I'm a B. sort of ok i guess. It's better than XP Home olive green theme now that's ugly. I change ubuntu theme to my liking, although it is hard to get all the colours to work together, :-k ](*,) #-o

OP should make this a poll. I fall under the B and C categories, I don't mind using Ubuntu with the default theme but I customized It every now and then when I was an Ubuntu user. The look of Ubuntu has probably deterred a few potential new users.

Half B and half D.

I don't mind the look of it... but the color scheme is bleah. I've never cared for their wallpapers... intrepid's is better than hardy's... but I'm not a fan.

I pretty quickly installed emerald and compiz on here and found some nice emerald themes to completely change the way the interface looks.

It's nice that it includes a few different themes with it's default so you can ditch the default one, so I don't see it as a big deal.. I customize the look of any OS I use though... so I guess I'm just used to it.

A real poll would have been much more effective not that there hasn't been five thousand threads on this topic already.... Otherwise the default look doesn't bother me since it doesn't take too long for me to completely revamp my desktop after an install.

Put me down as "B":I used the default theme for a while as it is unique enough that my mind did not get tricked into thinking I was on my Mac or my Mom's windows box. That said, I quickly figured out how to download some very nice themes that have a lot less orange and brown!

I am partial to these themes from www.gnome-look.org:

I think when I first started using Ubuntu, I changed a bunch of stuff from brown to blue.

But on the other hand, the last time I used Ubuntu, I had a very snazzy GTK theme called Dust. My configuration was the result of an effort to make the Ubuntu colors work. And boy, did they work.

I'm pretty much E here.

There are occasional times when I *try* to surrender to the orange-brown color scheme and do something positive with it.

That never lasts too long and I'm back browsing through themes again.

My favorite themes are Mc4Lin and Blubuntu.

I don't keep the default themes/colors with any distro I use, so I don't know what the big deal is. Changed it in Windows all the time when I used that, too.

I don't mind the brown, I hate the default look for two other reasons:

1. Ugly title bar buttons;
2. Ugly and eye-hurting fonts.

That's probably why I wouldn't trust them on a "visual redesign" :) It's very possible they will make it worse!

Thankfully 8.10 includes this package (apt://community-themes). I really like the Dust theme.

It really depends on what mental state you're in at the time. For instance, after several beers, it kind of takes on this mellow look. After several more, it actually looks pretty alright, you know?

(The mind boggles to think what Ubuntu's default look is like after doing some acid.)

When I used Ubuntu, the first thing I did after installation was changing the looks.

Now I don't use Gnome anymore.

Don't like it much.

They could change it a bit, maybe to a "citrine" look
with glassy looking buttons and bars.

Yellowish, lighter, golden brown colours, instead of the drab, dark, caramel look.

I wouldn't call the current set up horrible, but it could be improved upon.

E here :)

Would it be difficult to have 3-4 themes and allow users to choose one during install? Simple choice might be enough, like "What color would you like your desktop to be?", and offer 3-4 choices... Default choice could be the current default, since its designers (and almost no one else) love it so much :)

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been moved to the Recurring Discussions forum. (rimshot) Yes, GNOME is ugly by todays standards. No gradients, nothing glossy... It's almost Windows 95/98/ME/2000 all over again. Plain old gray panels from the 1990s. Bleh. At least you can change themes and make the bars transparent to at least give the illusion of it being made out of glass or something a little more with the times. If the theme devs wanna be lazy about GNOME when 9.04 is released, the least they could do to make GNOME look nicer is make the panels slightly transparent by default, and not settle for a background like what came with 8.10 (a friend of mine said it looked like a bunch of coffee stains on dirt).

It's not horrible but elegant, however I changed it as most users do to fulfill our native computer user's instinct to customize appearance and look and feel better and more comfortable when using our beloved PC.

I used the default theme for around six months and didn't feel uncomfortable, then browsed into gnome-look and picked my current theme :)

I couldn't care less about the "look" of Ubuntu. I'm a beginner and this thread does NOT apply to beginners. Anyone(a beginner) with half a brain would FIRST go about setting up all their hardware to work correctly in Ubuntu. Only THEN should they really care about the "look" of the distribution.

joshuajtl
February 23rd, 2009, 07:31 PM
I have always felt the Ubuntu color scheme especially is just awful. A default look should be something people generally can agree is not horrible. Not how many people love or hate the look. Just something everyone can tolerate, or most everyone. I cannot tolerate the Ubuntu color scheme. The art team should take a cue from what is most tolerated in all other segments of public art, you don't often see people walking around sporting brown & orange clothing, or cars, or houses do you? Why would those people want to then see it on their computers.

For those that care...

Mark Shuttleworth has announced (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2009-February/000536.html) Ubuntu 9.10:

[INDENT]Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the *Karmic Koala*, the
newest member of our alliterative menagerie.
[...snip...]

Desktop

First impressions count. We’re eagerly following the development of
kernel mode setting, which promises a smooth and flicker-free startup.
We’ll consider options like Red Hat’s Plymouth, for graphical boot on
all the cards that support it. We made a splash years ago with Usplash,
but it’s time to move to something newer and shinier. So the good news
is, boot will be beautiful. The bad news is, you won’t have long to
appreciate it! It only takes 35 days to make a whole Koala, so we think
it should be possible to bring up a stylish desktop much faster. The
goal for Jaunty on a netbook is 25 seconds, so let’s see how much faster
we can get you all the way to a Koala desktop. We’re also hoping to
deliver a new login experience that complements the graphical boot, and
works well for small groups as well as very large installations.

[...more snip...]

The desktop will have a designer’s fingerprints all over it - we’re now
beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but
the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the
whole new look.

[...one more snip...

Before I ever install (or remove) one piece of software on a fresh install, the first thing I do is remove thos god-awful wallpapers and icons and make it look good, as opposed to something my cat barfed onto my screen.

Hell yeah. The default brown look is awful. When I was thinking about migrating to Ubuntu one thing that really put me off for a long time now was the default theme.
However, I did migrate (for security reasons), came across some fantastic themes and customized my desktop to my heart's content. As of now I am very happy with the look that I have achieved.
But dear Ubuntu developers, you need to really improve the default theme to make it attractive to newbies. This is a fantastic OS and I would like to see it emerge as the best.

The default look of Kubuntu (KDE 4) is much better by the way.

I too have change the colors. But I do not like the brown and orange when the computer boots and I hope that is changed also.

I hear they are going to change in 9.10 but I do not know to what. I also wonder if they are going to change the forum colors. They are not too bad but it does sort of look blah. I would like to see the ubuntu red to be more of a candy apple red and change the orange to another shade. Maybe yellow.

Depends on how bright it is, the old Sabayon Red and Black was very slick and the new blue and black isn't too shabby either.
