Does anybody here know of a good program that will allow me to edit the metadata on my pictures (and save this with the image, rather than in a database or some such)? I tried a few things in the repos but nothing allows me to do this. Can anybody give me some pointers?

Digikam 0.10 (needs KDE 4.2 installing). The KDE 4.2 Gwenview also provides this functionality (they share a plugin framework).

I was under the false impressions that gthumb did this. Now that I've seen that it doesn't, any similar native gnome apps that do it?

try DigiWF.....it is awesome!!! lets you edit the xmp metadata of images and video of single files, and even multiple files, right from a right-click item in nautilus. it is a very light-weight and sleek solution.

https://launchpad.net/digiwf

you can add the PPA repository (https://launchpad.net/~svd/+archive/ppa) to Software Sources and install it via Synaptic so you get automatic updates, or you can just install the DEB package on the overview page.
