Is it possibly to set up backend server, and than to install the front end client to a usb bootable device?

Since the Mrs. has used Windows her entire life, any change is big change for her. I'd like to just give her a thumb drive and let her boot the usb for a front end that connects to the server.

I figure I could also the use the bootable usb as testing front end client to create additional front ends to test.

Maybe you could try this
http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-install-ubuntu-linux-on-usb-bar

or dig through google
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=install+ubuntu+on+a+usb+drive+OR+stick&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=

alternately if you only want to watch your recordings on windows you could also use XBMC as a windows front-end.

Hi,

have you tried it ? I have a 'normal' backend, with disks etc on the network. I installed 8.04.1 to my miniITX box with the HDD unplugged. The installer detected the 2G USB device as a scsi disk. I just installed to that and it 'just works'. Ive been running like that on 2 front ends (no hdds in either) for about 6 months now with no problems.

I've done nothing about the number of log file writes etc that might be happening and killing the 2G usb stick, I figure if it breaks the usb stick once a year, i'll just replace it - how much is a 2G stick now ? The machine is (obviously) much quieter and cooler as well.
