In gnome with any theme, when some application statrs, mouse pointer shape turns into rolling eggs, which is not very convenient to click something else.
And it is not appropriative to wait while everything loads, like under windows.

Please, point me where to configure mouse pointer shapes to disable rolling eggs behaviour.

You can try System, Pref, Appearance, customize, pointer

the "oxy-white", "redglass" show the same eggs,
the "whireglass" and "handhelds" show a watch, which also was not designed to be a pointer.

Is it possible to install another, more appropriate pointer shapes, say, from ms-windows ?

The DMZ pointer theme shows a disk, which I feel is more pragmatic than hourglass of Windows.

You'll find plenty of cursor themes in http://gnome-look.org. Just pick one you like.
