I believe this has been discussed numerous times over.

The linux binary of Xmame is not maintained very well. SDLMame however is maintained much better and more regularly. Functionality wise, I feel that SDLmame is actually a cleaner functioning application.

It seems sdlmame is the clear winner.

SDLmame for me. Xmame seems to have better graphical frontends as well as more options for emulation, but at the end that doesn't really matter when all you want to do is play the darn game. Software emulation on xmame works much better for me than with sdlmame, which is a bit of a turn off given that opengl acceleration causes blinking with fglrx (I use Compiz and there is no way I'm turning it off :)). I can't get any of my gamepads to work with xmame, which trumps any positive it may have over sdlmame for me (playing KoF with a keyboard is just a big no). Sdlmame is better "kept" in comparison, but the newer versions have problems reading many of my neogeo roms, while xmame works perfectly with everything.

Well I've finally ditched Gxmame and xmame. It was very good but certain controls for two player games were problematic.

I now use the sdlmame on both my Desktop and Laptop Ubuntu computers. For frontends: on the laptop I use Loemu and on the Deksop I use WahCade. I have just noticed that a few games don't work in WahCade that did work in GXMame. Strange!

Update: I just uninstalled the sldmame I got from here (http://wallyweek.altervista.org/rel129.php) and installed the synaptic sdlmame. Now more games work than with the newer sdlmame. There are still a small few not working though that did work in GXMame!
