Hi All,

Ive got someone that wants to try out Linux, so I thought I'd give Ubuntu to the person.

The person will be using it for general thing (email, browsing etc) I would like to have the best environment that would be good a new user.

So 2 questions:

1 - Should I get 8.04 or 8.10 ?
2 - If I download 8.04 is it the point release that Im getting or will I be downloading 8.04 and then need to upgrade to the point release (bandwith is expensive so it does play a factor)

Thanks

I'd say 8.10 however 8.04 is supported for longer as it is an LTS version, this might or might not matter to you.

The latest download is for 8.04 is 8.04.2 which will mean fewer updates to download after install.

I'd go for 8.04 as it's a lot more stable and reliable when compared with 8.10 (and also supports floppy drives by default) It's a long term release and will therefore be supported for a longer time than 8.10 (short term release, due to be superseded by Jaunty 9.04 in April). With 8.04 you won't get all the latest features unless they are backported, but you won't miss much.
You can download the latest version of 8.04 from here. (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/hardy/daily-live/current/)

1. I'd go for the older 8.04 so he doesn't have to do anything in 6 months.
2. The links on the Ubuntu home page will get you the original release so there will be a lot of upgrades, I suggest you get the minimal CD which only contains a 10-20 megs installer package that installs you a minimal Ubuntu and then do a sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop to get all the usual goodies. If the bandwidth is a real bad issue, then ubuntu-desktop might contain too much stuff for you.

Thanks for the info - I decided to go for Ubuntu 8.04.2 desktop which can be directly downloaded from the website.

Will rather give a newbie something that's a bit more stable and has been tested for longer than something that's more cutting edge
