Links back to ubuntuforums.org are posted rather frequently on this forum. It's impossible to say what for example this link contains without clicking it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812

Now, imagine, if there was a helpful tooltip or perhaps the link would be automatically formatted e.g. like this: subject: Ubuntu Security (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812)

People are lazy to and many people don't even know how to manually make proper links. Also clicking around is tedious.

I like the idea, but it sounds like a coding challange. This would also have to pull entries from the database to fetch the thread title, and most of us know the forums have been having database issues a while back.

The one part I like about the links the way they are commonly posted is that they tell you [for the most part] exactly where they go without having to look at the status bar.

for example, when I read http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091 , I know that the thread in question is [or should] be on ubuntu forums. Of course someone could do http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091 (http://www.google.com/) and I would be fooled (It points to google this time :)). To fix this, maybe prepending the phrase 'ubuntuforums:" to the title would help, i.e. UbuntuForums: The BUMP Thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091) would do the trick.

That's just a few random ideas, although I don't see this happening anytime soon. I could be wrong, though.

I believe there is a [thread] tag used for internal linking, but it seems not to be frequently used... meaning, I've never used it, and I don't recall ever seeing it.

Test: 520091

Edit: Hmm, doesn't work as I would hope...

I don't know that that link is into ubuntuforums.org any more than otherwise. :)

It's been mentioned on the previous pages of this thread.

try this: <your text here>

when hovering over links in firefox, the statusbar will show the link's target. However, looking at that, I suppose I could have done something like UbuntuForums: The BUMP Thread (http://icanhascheezburger.com/), and you may never know.
