Hi - my problem is very simple. I'd like to record my screen - but whenever I try to use g-rMD, it records itself and the preview window in it indefinitely until it lags my computer up so much I can't do anything but do a forced reboot.

Is there a way I can make the recorder oblivious to itself (e.g it doesn't record itself/ignores itself)?

1st- I'm sad to say recordMyDesktop sucks.
If you want smoother fps then disable "--full-shots" but it really sucks because no 3D will be screencasted (i can't screencast Blender 3d).

I have "ultra fast CPU" Core 2 Duo e7400.
Now recordMyDesktop support 1core + any other program (not Blender) uses same core.

What most weird screencasting 2fps @1440x896 pix will use 80-100% of allways same core that other program uses. Then no other program will respond. 5fps then firefox starts after 3 minutes & youtube flash feature (video) wont be displayed (white screen).

I can't scroll even webpabe when screencasting 1fps @1440x896.

My PC specs: C2D e7400, HD-4670, 2Gb DDR2 1066, MB P43.
CPU is cool "not hot" 30-45 C (zalman CNPS7000C-Cu LED).
3D & 2D under 64bit 8.10 is smooth DVD-s as well (not sony new DVD-s like spider-man 3). Linux wont play new DVD-s with new copy protection.

Under Vista e4500 screencasting:
*Camstudio DivX 15fps @1680x1050 (4GB Camstudio limit)
*Hypercam huffyuv 30fps @1680x1050 (low cpu usage of 1core)
*camtasia default 30-60fps @1680x1050 (very low cpu usage)

The problem has to be with your computer. I have a laptop running a Core 2 duo 2.0 GHz CPU, 2 gigs of ram, an Nvidia Geforce 8600M graphics card, all running on Ubuntu Intrepid. I can run rmd at 15 fps with 100 percent video quality and on-the-fly encoding at 1440x900 and it only uses about 33% CPU. Also, it is able to record "3d" if by 3d you include the compiz desktop cube effect.

I would suggest checking if your computer is using the proprietary nvidia/ati driver and isn't doing software rendering.

Something is really wrong. Mini Intel Atom net-book with int video can to smoother fps. Everyone is saying that this problem exists only with Ati video cards, but no one knows how to fix this. My Ubuntu 8.10 is using default proprietary driver (maybe i shold install 9.2 from Ati site).
How can i check if it's doing software rendering or not.

Hi

I installed Ati drivers 9.2, still no improvements for RMD.

I have the same problem on my desktop with an ati card and my laptop with an intel card.
Can't record the cube, which is what i want to do.

Look here for more information on this bug concerning ati drivers and screencasting https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-recordmydesktop/+bug/509111

I've had this problem for a long time as well, but either the latest stable compiz (0.8.6) or the latest driver from the ati website (10.6 for radeon 45xx) seems to have fixed it. I'm the only one it's worked for so far, so please verify and add it to that bug report
