wah fun

I would like to go production with ubuntu but I needed to check it out first. I installed 8.04 (I chose 8.04 rather than 8.10 due to comments I was seeing about 8.10 problems.) as a guest OS in virtualbox on an xp machine and allocated 960 mb ram. I implemented all the settings in virtualbox to ensure proper operation - including the CD/DVD passthrough option. I upgraded ubuntu 8.04 to the latest version and all updates. I also installed guest additions in virtualbox. All set, I thought.
Everything worked beautifully except the system could not play music cd's. In fact, rythmbox, vlc, gnomeplayer, juicer, all could not even connect to the audio cd. They just grind away and eventually time out.
DVD movies played with sound (after installing the necessary codecs). Sound works everywhere else it is called for. I then searched the ubuntu forums for a solution and found thread 766683 - a comprehensive guide to settng up sound. So, I completed all the steps outlined in this guide and voila, still no sound! I have checked the sound settings to ensure the correct sound card is identified and being used - it is. So, I am at a loss. Even though I am a linux noob, it seems that since sound works with all the other programs, it should work with a music cd.
In all fairness, I must say that this problem is not unique to ubuntu as I have tried other distros (open suse, mint, fedora, pclos, vector)with the same result. The closest I have gotten to playing audio cd's is with vector linux. It quickly (1-2 seconds)sees the audio cd and creates the playlist and shows to be playing but alas - no sound.
Well, as this is a requirement for my desktop system, it appears to be a show stopper for me moving to linux. And that is a shame. I really enjoy all other aspects of linux systems.
I would like anyone who has had this problem and successfully resolved it to respond. Please - no rude or defamatory remarks. I am just trying to get my system to play audio cd's.
My system:
Windows xp, dual core AMD processor running at 2 Mhz, with 2 Gb ram.
Audio controller: Intel 82801 AA
Thank you in advance for you help.
