Whats the difference between they're minimal installs? I know the standard desktop cd's Ubuntu uses not quite free things in it's repositories while Debian doesn't and Debian uses more Gnome programs than Ubuntu.
But right at the core whats different?
Thanks.

Debian prides itself on being GNU while Ubuntu includes more propriety extras. Debian is far more stable than ubuntu and doesn't follow a set release cycle.
Ubuntu is based off debian so you will have a lot of the same core but ubuntu modifies some code so you can't always guarantee compatability between debian and ubuntu packages although most will work.
Ubuntu also seems to add in a lot of extras to attempt at being more beginner friendly

WhyDebian on Debian Wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/WhyDebian) might be worth reading on this matter.
When it comes to Ubuntu:
1. Easy to install
2. Easy to use
3. Ubuntu has a big community which can offer a lot of help.
Other than that you will probably discover why some prefer Ubuntu and some prefer Debian. I prefer Debian myself. Been using Debian for 10 years now and I feel it's the best! (All distributions have their problems and it also includes Debian..)

A very basic install of Debian, installs a skeleton system to get you started and nothing else. This is similar in a way to installing from the Ubuntu server disk and not installing any tasks/services.

The standard Debian install (no desktop environment) is like the command-line system of Ubuntu which you can get from the alternate or server CD. In Debian, more emphasis is built on making your own system with a custom selection of software packages.
