Had this problem when using a machine stored on a ntfs partition.. writing the top command from the console I saw at the first place the ntfs-3g process..
So.. are your virtual machines on a ntfs partition?
bye,
Giovanni.

try using virtualbox - it's really great - also i think it may now be able to handle vmware created files - not 100% sure but give it a spin anyhow

@Virtual DarKness: I am using in my normal root partition. I havent tried on a different partition
@Neural oD: I downloaded virtual box yesterday and installed so I'm yet to try it out
thanks

Turn off background snapshots. That is the most ridiculous feature of VMware which slows it down to a crawl. I don't know anyone that has it turned on.
Cheers,
Herman
