Hello i'm running Doom 3 on my PC with Ati Radeon 9800. It doesn't look as good as it could but i think it's ok. But during gameplay in randomly freezes, every 10 or 20 minutes. I have to shutdown the computer "by hand" because the hole system is locked.

Anyone else with (a solution to) this problem ?

cya, tim

Sorry I can't offer any solution, but it sounds like a driver problem. (I'm using different hardware so...)

yeah its the fault of ATI here, it works fine with nvidia drivers (from what I hear) but as we all know ati is the king of crappy linux support (arstechnica actually gave it their official "thumbs down" award).

No, it doesn't work fine with Nvidia, it works GREAT - just as fast as Windows, and with the same amazing graphics.

BTW, note to Ubuntu package repository maintainers - can we please get a newer version of the Nvidia drivers packages ? The newer driver packages (version 66 binaries and source) are available on Debian repositories, and these are REQUIRED for the 6600 series cards (which are not supported by current drivers in Ubuntu repositories), as well as having performance improvements on all cards (especially 6800 series). It is possible of course to download the packages yourself and install using dpkg. I would advise against using the non debian packages on Nvidia's web page, as their built in installers tend to mess things up. I use the nvidia-kernel-source package, but the binary package works just as well.
